Sorivudine(CAT: I009563) is an antiviral nucleoside analogue belonging to the pyrimidine class, structurally related to thymidine. It exerts its activity through selective inhibition of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) replication after intracellular phosphorylation to its active triphosphate form, which disrupts viral DNA synthesis. Sorivudine has been clinically used in the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and is valuable in virology research as a reference antiviral compound. Its mechanism and selectivity make it a useful tool for studying nucleoside analog metabolism, viral polymerase inhibition, and antiviral drug development against DNA viruses.
