Riluzole (Cat No.: A000389) is a neuroprotective drug primarily used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It works by inhibiting glutamate release, inactivating voltage-dependent sodium channels, and interfering with intracellular signaling pathways. These mechanisms help reduce excitotoxicity, a major contributor to neuron death in ALS. Riluzole modestly extends survival and delays the need for mechanical ventilation. It is administered orally and generally well-tolerated, though liver function monitoring is recommended. Research continues into its potential use in other neurodegenerative disorders.
