Protohypericin(CAT: R072685) is a naturally occurring naphthodianthrone derivative and a direct biosynthetic precursor of hypericin, the well-known bioactive compound from Hypericum perforatum (St. John’s Wort). As a photosensitive molecule, protohypericin undergoes light-induced conversion to hypericin, making it an important intermediate in studying photobiology and photodynamic therapy. It exhibits notable antiviral, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties, largely associated with its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light activation. Protohypericin is a valuable tool for research in natural product biosynthesis, photodynamic mechanisms, and medicinal chemistry, as well as for exploring therapeutic applications of light-activated compounds.
