Aloin is an anthroquinone found in <em>Aloe vera</em> that has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial activities. It inhibits lipid peroxidation induced by AAPH (Item No. <span claa=/itemid/>82235</span>) and hemin in LDL, AAPH-induced hemolysis, and lipid peroxidation of erythrocyte membranes <em>in vitro</em> (IC<sub>50</sub>s = 142.4, 2.85, 31.7, and 71 μM, respectively). <em>In vivo</em>, aloin inhibits the accumulation of superoxide and malondialdehyde (MDA) and inhibits induction of TNF-α and IL-6 in a rat model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Aloin reduces growth of HeLaS3 human cervix carcinoma cells (IC<sub>50</sub> = 97 μM) <em>in vitro</em>. It also inhibits the growth of <em>M. tuberculosis</em> H<sub>37</sub>Ra and <em>M. bovis</em> (MICs = 32 and 128 μg/ml, respectively).
