Triiodomethane(CAT: R041854), commonly known as iodoform (CHI₃), is a yellow, crystalline compound with a distinctive antiseptic odor. It is characterized by its high iodine content and trigonal pyramidal molecular structure. Historically used as a topical antiseptic and disinfectant, triiodomethane exhibits mild antimicrobial activity but has largely been replaced by more effective agents. In organic synthesis, it is produced via the iodoform reaction, serving as a diagnostic test for methyl ketones and secondary alcohols. Its high density and limited solubility in water make it easy to isolate. While medically obsolete, it remains relevant in teaching laboratories and as a reagent in chemical research.
