Streptolysin O (CAT: I017311) is a cholesterol-dependent, oxygen-labile cytolysin produced by Streptococcus pyogenes. It binds to cholesterol-containing membranes and forms pores, leading to cell lysis and cytotoxicity. Widely used in cell biology and immunology research, SLO enables selective plasma membrane permeabilization, allowing controlled delivery of macromolecules into the cytosol while preserving organelle integrity. It is also applied in studies of bacterial pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions, and immune response mechanisms. Due to its reversible activity under reducing conditions, Streptolysin O serves as a versatile experimental tool in membrane biology, cytosolic delivery assays, and infection research.
