Phenylephrine(CAT: I011428) is a selective α₁-adrenergic receptor agonist commonly used as a decongestant, vasopressor, and mydriatic agent. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water and alcohol. By stimulating α₁-receptors, phenylephrine induces vasoconstriction, reducing nasal mucosal swelling and increasing blood pressure in hypotensive states. In ophthalmology, it is applied topically to dilate pupils for diagnostic procedures. Unlike epinephrine, it has minimal β-adrenergic activity, resulting in reduced cardiac stimulation.
