[6,6]-Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is a soluble fullerene derivative widely used as an electron acceptor in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. Its phenyl and butyric acid methyl ester groups enhance solubility in common organic solvents, enabling co-processing with donor polymers to form efficient bulk heterojunctions. PCBM facilitates rapid exciton dissociation, efficient charge transfer, and high electron mobility, making it indispensable in OPVs and as an electron transport material in perovskite–PCBM solar cells. Available in 99% purity for general OPV use or 99.5% purity for OFET applications, PCBM is a benchmark material in organic electronics research.
