Naloxone HCl (CAT: A000537) is an opioid receptor antagonist widely used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose, including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, freely soluble in water, and is typically administered via intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, or intranasal routes. Naloxone binds competitively to μ-, κ-, and δ-opioid receptors, displacing opioid molecules without activating the receptors, thereby rapidly restoring normal breathing in cases of opioid toxicity. It has a rapid onset but relatively short duration of action, often requiring repeat dosing. In research, it is also used to study opioid signaling and receptor pharmacology.
