Methenamine(CAT: A001044) (also known as hexamethylenetetramine or urotropine) is a heterocyclic organic compound composed of four nitrogen atoms bridged by six methylene groups in a cage-like structure. It is widely used as a urinary antiseptic, where it decomposes in acidic environments to release formaldehyde, providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial action. Methenamine also finds applications in chemical synthesis, and solid fuel tablets for portable heating. In industrial and laboratory settings, it serves as a curing agent for phenolic resins and as a component in corrosion inhibitors. It is water-soluble, stable, and non-hygroscopic.
