Mefenamic acid(CAT: A000775) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with the molecular formula C₁₅H₁₅NO₂, belonging to the anthranilic acid (fenamate) class. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. Mefenamic acid works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, reducing prostaglandin synthesis and thereby alleviating pain, inflammation, and fever. Clinically, it is used for short-term treatment of mild to moderate pain, including menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). In research, it is studied for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its pharmacokinetic behavior and interactions with prostaglandin-mediated biological processes.
