Lipoic acid inhibits activation of nuclear factor kappa-B, which is involved in AIDS progression.
Target: NF-κB [1]
Lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant, in organs of rats submitted to sepsis. Lipoic acid is effective in reducing MPO activity, lipid peroxidation in the liver, and protein carbonylation only in the kidney. Alpha-lipoic acid is a phase 2-inductive nutraceutical, a naturally occurring dithiol compound that functions as an essential cofactor for mitochondrial bioenergetic enzyme. Lipoic acid is recognized as a universal antioxidant capable of scavenging free radicals, chelating metals, regenerating endogenous antioxidants, and modulating various signal transduction pathways. [2] Lipoic acid suppresses HIV replication in cultured cells and enhanced helper T cells in mice. ALA inhibits replication of HIV by reducing the activity of reverse transcriptase, the enzyme responsible for manufacturing the virus from the DNA of lymphocytes.
