Levocarnitine (CAT: A000581) is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound (C₇H₁₅NO₃) essential for transporting long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for β-oxidation and energy production. Synthesized endogenously from lysine and methionine, it plays a vital role in cellular energy metabolism, particularly in muscle tissue. Levocarnitine supplementation is used therapeutically to treat primary and secondary carnitine deficiencies, certain metabolic disorders, and conditions associated with impaired fatty acid utilization.
