Gonyautoxin-5 (Cat No.:T000014) is a potent neurotoxin belonging to the saxitoxin family, produced by certain marine dinoflagellates and freshwater cyanobacteria. It acts by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve and muscle cells, inhibiting action potential propagation and leading to paralysis. GTX-5 is a water-soluble, tetrahydropurine alkaloid with lower toxicity than saxitoxin but still contributes to paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in humans. It is studied in toxicology, marine biology, and pharmacology for its ion channel specificity and potential therapeutic applications in pain management and neuromuscular disorders under tightly controlled conditions.
