Gestodene(CAT: A000576) is a synthetic progestogen belonging to the third generation of oral contraceptive agents. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. Structurally derived from 19-nortestosterone, gestodene exhibits high affinity for progesterone receptors, effectively inhibiting ovulation and altering cervical mucus to prevent sperm penetration. It is commonly formulated in combination with estrogens, such as ethinylestradiol, for hormonal contraception. Gestodene has a potent progestational effect at low doses and minimal androgenic activity, offering favorable cycle control.
