C60 Fullerene Malonic Acid (carboxyfullerene) is a functionalized C60 derivative bearing multiple malonic acid groups, which impart water solubility and strong antioxidant properties. It effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species, including peroxides and superoxide anions, and inhibits lipid peroxidation. On gold Au(111) surfaces, C60 fullerene malonic acid self-assembles into ultrathin two-dimensional networks via hydrogen bonding interactions. Beyond biomedical relevance, it has proven valuable in energy storage applications as an electrolyte additive for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). By stabilizing the cathode–electrolyte interface, it enhances the structural stability of NCM811 cathodes and mitigates parasitic side reactions with LiPF₆, supporting improved cycling performance.
