Desciclovir (Cat No.:I025922), also known as 6-deoxyacyclovir or BW A515U, is an orally active prodrug of the antiviral agent acyclovir (ACV). Designed to enhance ACV’s oral bioavailability, desciclovir is converted into active acyclovir in the human body by the enzyme xanthine oxidase. This conversion results in higher plasma concentrations of ACV compared to direct oral administration of ACV, improving therapeutic efficacy against herpes simplex virus infections. Desciclovir is generally well-tolerated, with minimal adverse effects observed in clinical studies. Its enhanced absorption and rapid conversion make it a valuable option in antiviral therapy.
