Descarboxyl levofloxacin(CAT: R046536) is a synthetic derivative of levofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, in which the carboxylic acid group at position 3 of the quinolone core is removed. This structural modification results in loss of antibacterial activity, but the compound is still of interest in metabolite analysis, degradation studies, and structure–activity relationship (SAR) research. Descarboxyl levofloxacin may form during thermal, photolytic, or microbial degradation and is often monitored in pharmaceutical stability testing. It is used in research to better understand the pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and chemical stability of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
