Cyclopropanecarboxylic acid(CAT: R014421) is a small cyclic carboxylic acid with the molecular formula C₄H₆O₂, consisting of a strained three-membered cyclopropane ring bearing a carboxyl group. It typically appears as a colorless liquid or crystalline solid, with limited solubility in water but good solubility in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. The high ring strain of the cyclopropane moiety imparts unique reactivity, making it a useful intermediate in organic synthesis. Cyclopropanecarboxylic acid is employed in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals (including pyrethroid insecticides), and specialty chemicals, as well as in studies of ring strain effects and reactivity in small-ring systems.
