It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a distinctive odor and is used primarily as a precursor in organometallic and synthetic chemistry. Cycloheptatriene serves as a ligand in coordination complexes and as a starting material for the synthesis of tropylium salts, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. Though not aromatic itself, it readily forms the aromatic tropylium ion. It is flammable and should be handled with care under standard safety protocols.
