N3 dye, is one of the earliest and most influential ruthenium-based sensitizers developed for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). As a benchmark complex, it set the paradigm for heterogeneous charge-transfer sensitizers in mesoporous solar cell research. Fully protonated N3 dye exhibits absorption maxima at 518 nm and 380 nm, with extinction coefficients of 13,000 and 13,300 M⁻¹·cm⁻¹, respectively. When adsorbed onto nanocrystalline TiO₂ films, N3 dye achieves an impressive 10% light-to-electricity conversion efficiency under AM 1.5 irradiation, establishing its role as a foundational material in advancing high-efficiency DSSC technology.
