Benzotriazole (CAT: R058648) is a heteroaromatic compound with the molecular formula C₆H₅N₃, consisting of a fused benzene and triazole ring system. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone. Benzotriazole is best known for its excellent corrosion-inhibiting properties, particularly for copper and copper alloys, where it forms a protective coordination layer on the metal surface. It is also used as a stabilizer in antifreeze, lubricants, and polymers, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, and photographic chemicals. Its high thermal stability and chemical resistance make it valuable in both industrial and research applications.
