Benazepril(CAT: I005202) is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (C₂₄H₂₈N₂O₅) used to treat hypertension, heart failure, and certain kidney disorders. It is administered orally as a prodrug and is hydrolyzed in the liver to its active metabolite, benazeprilat, which inhibits ACE, thereby reducing the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II—a potent vasoconstrictor. This leads to vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and decreased workload on the heart. Benazepril is valued for its long duration of action, allowing once-daily dosing, and is often prescribed alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Common side effects include cough, dizziness, and, rarely, hyperkalemia or angioedema.
