Basic Violet 14(CAT: R071093), also known as Crystal Violet or Gentian Violet, is a synthetic triarylmethane dye with a deep violet color, commonly used as a biological stain, textile colorant, and antimicrobial agent. It appears as a dark green crystalline powder that yields an intense purple solution in water or alcohol. In microbiology, it is a key component of Gram staining, differentiating Gram-positive from Gram-negative bacteria. It has also been used topically to treat fungal and bacterial skin infections. Basic Violet 14 binds strongly to cell walls and fabrics, offering vivid, long-lasting coloration.
