Aspartame (Cat No.: A001184) is a low-calorie artificial sweetener approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose. It is commonly used in diet sodas, sugar-free gum, and low-calorie foods and beverages. Chemically, it is a methyl ester of the dipeptide composed of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Upon digestion, it breaks down into its constituent amino acids and methanol. Aspartame is generally recognized as safe for the general population, but individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) must avoid it due to their inability to metabolize phenylalanine effectively.
