ICBA (1’,1’’,4’,4’’-tetrahydro-di[1,4]methanonaphthaleno[5,6]fullerene-C60) also known as IC60BA, is a fullerene bisadduct incorporating two indene functional groups. Designed as an advanced electron acceptor for organic photovoltaics, ICBA features a higher-lying LUMO level (0.17 eV above PCBM), which increases the open-circuit voltage (Voc) of P3HT-based solar cells and significantly enhances power conversion efficiency. The indene groups disrupt fullerene conjugation, lowering electron affinity while acting as electron donors, thereby improving charge separation. In addition to boosting Voc, ICBA can function as an electron cascade acceptor, facilitating charge transport and stability in bulk heterojunction and next-generation solar cell architectures.
