5-chloro-2-methyl-3-Isothiazolone (MCI, cas 26172-55-4) is an isothiazolinone-derived biocide used for controlling microbial growth in water-containing solutions. It is effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungi. This preservative is known as Kathon™ when used at a 3:1 ratio with methylisothiazolinone (MI). Recent reports have shown both MCI/MI and MI by itself can elicit contact sensitization.
