α-Methacrylic acid(CAT: R045654), commonly referred to as methacrylic acid (MAA), is an unsaturated carboxylic acid with the chemical formula C₄H₆O₂. It features a vinyl group (CH₂=C–) adjacent to a carboxylic acid, making it highly reactive in free-radical polymerization. MAA is widely used as a monomer in the production of methacrylate-based polymers and copolymers, which are key components in adhesives, coatings, resins, plastics, and dental materials. The carboxyl functionality also enables further chemical modification, improving adhesion and compatibility in polymer blends.
