(±)-Propylene oxide(CAT: R045648) is a chiral, epoxide-containing cyclic ether with the chemical formula C₃H₆O, presented as a racemic mixture of its (R)- and (S)-enantiomers. It is a highly reactive electrophile, widely used as a versatile intermediate in the production of polyurethane foams, glycols, and nonionic surfactants. Due to the strained three-membered epoxide ring, it readily undergoes nucleophilic ring-opening reactions with water, alcohols, and amines. Propylene oxide is also used in sterilization, fumigation, and polymer synthesis. It is volatile, flammable, and considered hazardous, requiring careful handling.
